Article #2

Death of Joseph Hayes

Our people were inexpressibly shocked Sunday morning to learn of the death of Joe Hayes, of Albion, who was found dead by his wife about 11 o'clock the evening previous.

Mr. Hayes was in Cresco during the evening and started home with a load of cement, flour and other articles, and on his was met his sons on their way to Granger.

Mrs. Hayes heard the team come in the yard and went out to meet her husband, and not finding him started down the road to meet him but found him lying dead at the foot of a very steep hill about 40 rods from the home.

The cause of his death is but conjecture. There were some indications that he might have been jolted from the wagon by a bad piece of road where he was found, or he might have fallen from the wagon after an attack of heart trouble to which he was subject.

Funeral services were held at St. Kearnes church at 10:30, Tuesday morning, conducted by Father Burke, of Decorah.
Mr. Hayes was one of the old residents of Albion Township, but was planning to remove to Cresco after a life time of hard work which had gained him a competence. He was an honorable, upright man whose every acquaintance was his friend, and who sincerely mourn his sudden and untimely death.
