Dorothy Sampson, age 86, of Decorah, IA died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Winneshiek Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday April 16, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA at 604 West Broadway. Rev. Melissa Bills presiding.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday.

Dorothy Mae (Olson) Sampson Engen was born March 26, 1928 to Joseph and Hattie (Huckins) Olson in Cresco, IA she attended schools in Cresco and Decorah. When Dorothy was twelve the family moved to Decorah. Dorothy married Gavin Sampson May 8, 1946 in Chicago, IL. She worked at The Ditto Grocery Store, Montgomery Wards, Penney’s, Sears and Troll’s Treasures in Decorah. Gavin died in 1994. Dorothy then married Lester Engen February 23, 2002 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. Dorothy was a member of VFW Auxiliary, Winneshiek Medical Center Auxiliary and the First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dancing and most of all, family activities. Dorothy was the life of any party.

Dorothy’s survivors include her husband: Lester Engen, Decorah, IA Two daughters: Barbara (Terry Yakish) Adams, Des Moines, IA, Brenda (Richard) Roher, Kewaskum, WI. Son: Gregg (Debbie) Sampson, Vinton, IA. Eight grandchildren: Rebecca (Victor Rocha) Bateman, Robert Bateman, Patti (Gus) Kuester, Tami Roher, Latisha (Scott) Leitheiser, Daniel Roher, Andrew Sampson and Evan Sampson. Nine great-grandchildren: Anthony and Eric Leitheiser, Timothy (Samantha) Nelson, Rachel and Nicholas Rocha, Ezry Sue and Alex Roher. Gabi and Olivia Kuester. Four Great great – grandchildren: Timothy Nelson Jr., Stehl, Charlize and Bailey Nelson. Half-sister: Norma (Gary) Harbit, Manchester, IA. Five step-daughters: Doris Sweet, Decorah, IA, Rosie (Gene) Hoover, Algona, IA, Joyce (Wayne) Teslow, Postville, IA, Jan (Boyd) Halverson, Decorah, IA, and Diane (Larry) Krivachek, Waukon, IA, and many step-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Hattie (Huckins) Olson and her first husband, Gavin Sampson.
