Lillian was born June 23, 1913 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Helmer and Stella (Arness) Hexom. She grew up in rural Decorah with her two sisters and brother, growing up she attended and was confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Lillian received her education in the Winneshiek County schools and graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1931. Following graduation she began working as a clerk in the F.W. Woolworth store in Decorah. She married Ralph Fitzgerald on December 27, 1938 at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. During World War II her husband Ralph was a civilian employee for the military, during that time they lived in Lexington, Kentucky and Baltimore, Maryland, following the war they returned to Cresco. Following Ralph’s death in December 1991, Lillian continued to reside in her home until she moved into the Assisted Living Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah in 2003. In June of 2007, she became the first resident in the new Aase Haugen Memory Care wing where she lived until moving into her present home in Aase Haugen where she celebrated her 100th birthday last June 23rd. Lillian is survived by two children: Mike (Pat) Fitzgerald of Decorah and Mari Ann (Dennis Blake) MacDuff of Cresco; seven grandchildren: Randy Fitzgerald of Windsor, CO, Jeff Fitzgerald of Chicago, IL, Aimie Kachingwe of Los Angeles, CA, Jason MacDuff of San Francisco, CA, Eric MacDuff of Des Moines, IA, Amanda Ullom of Lime Springs, IA and Ian Fitzgerald of Rochester, MN; and twelve great-grandchildren. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; two sisters: Grace Olson and Hazel Schweinfus; and a brother Howard Hexom.
