Raymond “Ray” Stoen, age 88, of Decorah, IA, died on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, with Rev. David Sorenson presiding. Burial will be in the Freeport Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., on Thursday morning at the funeral home.

Raymond Eugene Stoen was born on May 27, 1925, the son of Henry and Martina (Sollien) Stoen on the family farm near Highlandville, IA. Raymond attended rural country school and Decorah High School. He enlisted in the US Navy during World War II, serving from November 23, 1943 to February 1, 1944, on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands. He returned and worked as a carpenter, and then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for thirty years, retiring in 1988. Ray was a kind, dependable man. He enjoyed woodworking and made many birdhouses and projects. He was always willing to help out anyone in need. Raymond sang in the Luren Choir for many years, was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Raymond is survived by his wife: Darlyne Stoen, Decorah, IA. Four children: Peggy (Soren) Larsen, Marshfield, ME; Robert Stoen, Cresco, IA; Kathy Stoen, Decorah, IA; and Kyle (special friend, Kathy Tobin) Stoen, Decorah, IA; along with six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. One sister: Thelma Ellingson, Decorah, IA. One brother: Herbert Stoen, Decorah, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Ila Bolson, Platteville, WI and Beverlyne (Tyrome) Albertson, Cresco, IA, and Gaylen (Elaine) Bolson, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Martina (Sollien) Stoen. His son: Gregory Stoen on June 9, 1969. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Sophus Stoen, Polly Stoen, Kathryn Stoen, Don Bolson and Erven Ellingson.
