Palma (Polly) Alice Stoen, 84, of rural Decorah, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at her home. Funeral services are Friday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. Burial is in Big Canoe Church Cemetery. Pastor Kathy Wicks will officiate. Friends may call Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
She was born July 2, 1929, in Winneshiek county to Palmer and Alice (Engan) Nelson. She attended rural school at Hesper. She married Sophus Stoen March 30, 1947. The couple farmed in Winneshiek county. Polly also worked as a nursing assistant for Aase Haugen Homes in Decorah and Tweeten Healthcare in Spring Grove, Minn. Solphus preceded Polly in death December 22, 2005. She was a member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah and the Decorah American Legion Auxillary.
Survivors include her sons: David (Dorothy) Stoen of Quandahl, Jim (Lori) Stoen of Spring Grove, Minn. and Randy (Stephanie) Stoen of Quandahl; her daughters: Linda (John) Miller of Corydon, Diane (Leo) Moccico of Florida and Bonnie (Dwight) Nichols of Decorah; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Maynard Engan, of the state of Washington; her sister, Barbara Haugen, of Quandahl.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Sophus, she was preceded in death by her son, Larry and her grandson, Dusty; three brothers: Sonny, Earl and Ernest Engen; and her nephew, Harlan.
Polly was an extremely giving person who opened her home and heart to anyone, including animals that were in need.
