Howard Johnson, age 85, of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Road, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Mark Kvale presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Thursday morning.

Howard Maurice Johnson was born on July 29, 1928, the son of Helmer and Myrtle (Fosaaen) Johnson in Springfield Township, rural Decorah, IA. Howard was baptized and confirmed at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. He attended Bakke Country School and started driving dump truck at the age of sixteen. Howard also hauled cream and milk for the Nordness Creamery. Howard was united in marriage to LuVerne Yarwood on June 29, 1947, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Together they farmed southeast of Decorah, as well as driving semi over the road for many years, until he retired in 2005. Howard enjoyed watching old Western shows on TV, baseball games, listening to old country music, helping on the farm and having coffee with his buddies at the Family Table Restaurant. Howard was proud to have been able to drive the combine this past Fall; helping to farm with Paul and Matthew. Howard was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Howard is survived by his two sons: David (Lynda) Johnson and Paul (Carla Lukes) Johnson, both of Decorah, IA. Two grandchildren: Matthew (Ana) Johnson and Cheryl Johnson. Four great grandchildren: Zachary, Kairi, Elliana and Rachel. One sister: Jo Ann Meyer, Decorah, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Dixie Johnson, Luana, IA; Arlene (Ray) Fadness, Decorah, IA; Maxine Yarwood, Decorah, IA; Curt (Phyllis) Yarwood, Colorado Springs, CO; and Dean (Elaine) Yarwood, Colombia, MO, along with several nieces and nephews.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents: Helmer and Myrtle (Fosaaen) Johnson. His wife: LuVerne A. Johnson on April 19, 2003. One son: Larry Johnson on July 6, 1969. Three sisters: Marjorie (Erling) Fosaaen, Alice (Ahlert) Anfinson, and Arlene (Morris) Nelson. Two brothers: Arnold Johnson and Kenneth Johnson. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Jerome Meyer, Charles Yarwood, and Arla (Roy) Nesheim. Nieces and nephew: Julie (Nesheim) Mullenberg, Marilyn Anfinson and Jon Fosaaen.
