Galen W. Jacobson, age 86, of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday evening, February 25, 2014 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah with full military honors.
Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. Saturday, one hour before the service, at First Lutheran Church.
Galen Wayne Jacobson was born October 26, 1927 in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of Carl H. and Martha (Stevens) Jacobson. He was baptized at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church and confirmed by the Rev. T.A. Hoff at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa.
Galen attended East Side grade school in Decorah. He enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines on October 26, 1944. In April of 1945 he was sent to Europe as a U.S. Army sailor and was honorably discharged on December 16, 1945. He continued with the Merchant Marines as a civilian until July of 1949. He subsequently obtained his G.E.D. at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana in 1966.
From his May 21, 1949 marriage to Betty Kimball of New Orleans, Galen has one son, Bill of California.
Galen was in the wholesale candy business from 1949 to 1966. At that time he went to work for Lutheran Brotherhood (now known as Thrivent) from 1966 to 1988 when he retired. He also had a real estate license and passed the NASD test for security dealers. After over 50 years of living in Louisiana, Galen moved back to Decorah, Iowa to live in 1998.
Galen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Orleans, Louisiana and in 1953 he transferred to Atonement Lutheran Church in Metairie, Louisiana where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, on the Stewardship Board, and on the Board of Elders. He became a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah upon moving back here.
Galen is survived by his son, Bill of California; his brother, Roger D. and Jerene (Barth) Jacobson of Prescott, Arizona; his sister Helen E. (Jacobson) Olson of Decorah; and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl H. & Martha (Stevens) Jacobson and his brother-in-law, Kenneth L. Olson.
