Carol J. Hammel, age 70, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Mark Kvale officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 19 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Thursday one hour before the service at the church.

Carol Jean Hammel was born on March 12, 1943 in Decorah, Iowa the daughter of Leonard and Hattie (Matter) Keefe. She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. She attended Pleasant Township elementary school and was a 1961 graduate of Decorah High School.

On December 2, 1962 Carol was married to Roger Hammel at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with two children: Bonnie and Bruce.

Carol had worked at DECO and Wapsie Produce in Decorah and for 20 years she had worked at Aase Haugen Home, retiring in 2011.

Carol was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and was active in Martha Circle She was a meticulous homemaker: enjoying baking and sewing for her family and gardening. Going to Marquette gambling with her sisters, Kay and Joann were fun times. While her children were in school she took a great interest in their sporting and school activities and now spending time with her grandchildren, John and Thomas was most treasured.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Hattie Keefe and one brother, Leon Barth.

Carol is survived by her husband, Roger of Decorah; two children: Bonnie (David Brown) Hammel of Maple Park, IL and Bruce Hammel of Decorah; two grandchildren: John and Thomas Hammel and their mother, Kim Wolfort Hammel of Decorah; sisters and brothers: Rosemary (Alton) Lovstuen of Cedar Rapids, IA, Joann (Robert) Thorsten of Decorah, IA, Thomas Keefe of Racine, WI, Kay (Norman) Ihde of Decorah, IA, and William (Gail) Keefe of Decorah, IA; three aunts: Margaret Sorenson of Decorah, IA, Ethel Sensor of Decorah, IA and Bernice Landswerk of Texas; one sister-in-law, Rita (Duane) Snyder of Decorah, IA and one brother-in-law, Richard (Barbara) Hammel of Decorah, IA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.
