Richard Paul Havel was born on June 7, 1932, the son of John and Agnes (Barloon) Havel. He was a lifetime member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and graduated from Calmar High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and then joined his brother, Arnold, in Havel Plumbing and Heating business until the early 70s when he became head custodian for South Winneshiek High School. Richard married Carolyn Tilkes on June 18, 1958 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington, IA. Together they shared much love and happiness as they raised their ten children. He was a wonderful husband and father. Richard was known as a gentleman with a cheery disposition, willing to utilize his handyman and problem-solving skills for anyone who needed his talents. He enjoyed his retirement by spending time helping his children and watching his 21 grandchildren grow. He also liked working with wood, whether “making wood” for the wood burner or making shelves and clocks for his children. Richard’s greatest pleasure was when his whole family gathered to celebrate on any number of occasions.

Richard is survived by his wife: Carolyn Havel, Calmar, IA. Ten children: Barbara (Mark) Bohach, Spillville, IA; Paul (Margaret) Havel, Calmar, IA; Theresa (Terry) Hogenson, Muscatine, IA; Mary (Don) Smith, Fredericksburg, IA; Joan (Craig) Schaefer, Dubuque, IA; John (Julie) Havel, Calmar, IA; David Havel, Independence, IA; Ann (Craig) Adamson, Marion, IA; Joel (Natalee) Havel, Urbana, IA; Aimee (Andrew) Johnson, Marion, IA; and twenty-one grandchildren: Adam (Fiancé, Flannery Cerbin), Emily (Fiancé, Andrew Chamberlain), and Garrett Bohach; Matthew and Michael Havel; Katelynn, Ashley, and Morgan Hogenson; Quinn, Megan, Angel, and Isaac Smith; Hayley, Jonathan, and Luke Schaefer; Andrew Havel; Rachel, Griffin, and Chloe Adamson; Aidan and Ainsley Johnson.
