Virginia M. Volkering, age 90, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday morning, November 30, 2013 at Seasons Hospice, Joy Forsberg’s Foster Home, in Rochester, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Russell Cemetery in rural Decorah.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, one hour before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Virginia Marian (Johnson) Volkering was born on October 8, 1923 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Jennie (Brandt) Johnson. She graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1942.

Virginia was united in marriage to Gerald J. Volkering on February 7, 1948 in Decorah. This union was blessed with two daughters, Sheila and Janie.

She worked at the Decorah Public Library for 28 years, the last 20 years as librarian.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gerald on November 3, 1995; and her three sisters, Almeda Barth, Lillian Noecker and Aldora Snow.

Virginia is survived by her two daughters, Sheila (Tim) Rooney of Cedar Rapids, IA and Janie Holmes of Rochester, MN; five grandchildren: Ryan Holmes of Byron, MN, Cory Holmes of Rochester, Colin Rooney in Cedar Rapids, Noel (Kim) Rooney in Atlanta, GA and Callie Rooney of Cedar Rapids; and one great-grandson Quinten.
