Elgin Echo, Thur., 6 April 1899.
Charles Duff, a well to do bachelor who lived in Bluffton township, Winneshiek county, for many years, and was about 74 years of age, was found dead in his cabin on March 25th. He had lived alone, and at this time of year had few visitors.
Sunday afternoon about one o'clock one of the Keefe boys went over to his place and noticed no tracks had been made in the snow which fell the Friday evening previous and wondered if Mr. Duffy was not at home. He tried the door and then went to the window and looked in, saw two dogs lying on the floor, and over by the door lying on his face was Mr. Duffy. He had been seen the last time on Thursday night or Friday. No cause is given for his death, except the fact that he was subject to severe cramps, and it is thought possibly one of these attacks caused his death.

DEAD AND ALONE.
Charles Duffy, a Bluffton Township Farmer dies from Appoplexy.
Sunday last Coroner Gibson and Sheriff Christen were summoned to Bluffton township to hold an inquest over the remains of Charles Duffy, an old bachelor living not far from P. Keefe’s. Dr. A. F. Barfoot accompanied them to make the medical examination. The dead man had been missed about his home since Wednesday or Thursday and Sunday Mr. Keefe sent his boy Waiter over to see if he was at home. The boy found he could not open the door so looked in through the window but could see nothing. Going around the house he looked in at another window and then saw Duffy lying on the floor with his feet against the door. His report resulted in the call for the officers.
When the officers arrived a thorough examination of the body and the house was made, as there was appearance of foul play, but the medical examination soon disclosed that the cause of death was appoploxy. A jury was empanneled composed of P. Keefe, Edwin Crane and W. P. Foley and their verdict was in accord with facts above given.
Mr. Duffy was an eccentric old bachelor, probably seventy years or more of age. He had lived alone for years on his farm which is in a lonely spot, and a story is told that an unfortunate love affair of his youth caused him to lead a secluded life. His farm is a nice one of 200 acres. On his person was found a pocket book containing $240 in bills, but no other valuables were found about the place. His only relatives in this vicinity were two nephews—John Duffy, the drayman, of this city, and Frank Duffy, of Cresco. Another nephew, Ambrose Duffy lives in North Dakota. The funeral was held Tuesday at Bluffton.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1828 and died March 24, 1899. He is buried in St. Bridget Cemetery. Also his gravestone shows he had a wife named Ann.
