Lutheran Herald June 13, 1933

Rev. Lars Sherven was born in Hedemarken, Norway, Nov. 4, 1848. Four years old he came with his mother, brothers and sisters to America, the father having preceded them. Upon arriving in Winneshiek County they found that the father had passed away. The mother struggled on with her family,

At the age of thirteen young Sherven enrolled at Luther college, graduated in 1868, continued his studies at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., and was in 1871 ordained into the ministry at the age of 22.

His first pastorate was at French Creek, Wis. He also served pastorates in Iowa, a second pastorate in Wisconsin, also at Cleveland, Ohio, in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Montana; his last pastorate was at Santa Barbara, Calif., 1917 - 1919.

Although he served charges in the larger centers, still he seemed to have a special love for the home mission field, where he spent a great deal of his time and talents. Once he was given leave of absence for two years from his regular charge, another man taking his place meantime, in order that he could be relieved to do some organization and construction work in new fields which were to be opened up.

He was especially well fitted for this kind of work, active, of great courage, and a firm faith in the Savior whom he served.

In 1871, Mr. Shervin married Miss Oline Stovern, who died 23 years ago. To this union were born ten children. Those now living are: Ragna, Mrs. Hans Dalen; Agnes, Mrs. R. A. Larson; Laura, Robert, Gustav, Elizabeth, Mrs. Walter Emerson; there are also 8 grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

Rev. Lars Sherven died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson, Capitol, Montana. Funeral services were held in St. John's Church, Camp Crook, South Dakota, Rev. L. L. Ullensvang officiated, assisted by Rev. M. A. Olson. Interment took place in a cemetery near Capitol, Mont.
