Nels Askelson, son of Askil Monson and wife Synneva was born Jan. 5, 1835, at Sund, Bergens Stift, Norway. He was baptized in Ostervalds church Jan. 28, 1835; there he was also confirmed at the age of 14. Here he also married Johanne Monson on November 11, 1860. Two years later they moved to America and lived two years at Big Canoe, Iowa, then they moved to Bluffton Twp, where they made their home since. He died there Monday, March 23. He had 11 children. His wife died four years ago. Of the children only six are living: Mons, Susie Ellingson and Sarah at and near home; John, Aneta, N. Dak.; Nellie, Mrs. Durkee, N. Dak., and Mary, Mrs. Emery, Vegerville, Canada. All except the last were at the funeral which was held from the home and the Orleans Lutheran church on Thursday, March 26. Rev. H.M. Norman preached.

Thru years of hardship Nils had learned to love his Saviour and his death came as a great relief after much suffering.
