Janet Lea Thompson, age 61, of Decorah, IA, died Thursday morning, May 23, 2013 in her home after a short illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Inurnment will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Wednesday after 10:00 A.M., one hour before the service, at the church.

Janet Lea (Beatty) Thompson was born on May 21st, 1952, the daughter of Walter Harold and Harriett (Lubbock) Beatty in Vinton, Iowa. Janet graduated from the Vinton High School in 1970 and attended Coe College.

She was united in marriage to James (Rusty) Thompson on October 17, 1970, at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton, IA. Janet worked at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School and Happy Time Child Development Center where she served as director from 1982-1986. She was active with the Vinton First United Methodist Church teaching Sunday School and Bible School, President of the Vinton Women’s Club and President of Homes & Crafts Club.

In 1986, the family moved to Decorah, Iowa. Janet became a bench fan watching Shawn and Lance in their many sport activities and was on the Nordic Fest Board as the food chair person for 4 years. For 10 years she worked as a teacher associate with Decorah Community Schools. The family was members of the Decorah First United Methodist Church.

In 1996, Jim and Janet moved to Washington, Iowa. Janet worked at the Washington Community Schools. She also served as secretary on the Conger House Museum and was a member of Washington County Master Gardeners.

2002 brought Jim and Janet back to Decorah, where Janet volunteered at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Winneshiek Hospital Auxiliary, Eve Circle, UMW, Bazaar Boosters, served as publicity chair person for the Nordic Fest Board for 4 years, was secretary of Master Gardeners of Winneshiek County, and decorated trees for Festival of Trees. In 2008, Janet was the Nordic Fest Flag Recipient. Janet’s favorite time was spent watching Tucker, Brody & Clay play sports.

Janet is survived by her husband, Jim, of 42 years; her daughter, Shawn (Jon) Young of Decorah; her son, Lance (Michelle) Thompson of Sheffield, IA; grandchildren Tucker & Brody Young and step-grandchildren Cody & Clay Emhoff; her sister, Carole (Dick) Swanson of Cedar Rapids, her brother, Garth (Pat) Beatty of Vinton; sisters-in-law: Jackie (Dean) Werner of Van Horne, Nita (Don) Obermueller of Vinton, Janice (Terry) Babor of Marengo; brother-in-law Ronnie Thompson of Mt. Auburn; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
