ENOS S. LAMBERT was born in Madison Co., Ind. April 6th, 1832, and passed away to his home in the eternal morning June 22d, 1889, being a little more than 67 years of age.
Mr. Lambert came to Iowa in 1851 and has since lived in the vicinity of Castalia. He was married to Miss Esther A. M. Holcomb, April 19th, 1855, in Winnesheik Co., Iowa. To this onion there were born ten children, five boys and fire girls. One, Lincoln Anderson, died in infancy. This little one with beckoning hands has for many years been a tie, lifting the hearts of the parents toward the skies.
The deceased was converted and joined the United Brethren church in 1856. His life was one of religious growth. In l871 he received a special quickening of divine grace that has ever since led him constantly forward in holy things. He did not talk his religion so much as he lived it. Yet he was faithful in public prayer and testimony, as well as private life. His pastors always loved him. One of them recently said,— "Brother Lambert was a good man." Another said—“It seems that such men as Brother Lambert ought never die."
He was a man of influence with his follow men, and merit gave him a place of leadership. He was for many yearn in possession of official place in his township, besides serving on the county Board of Supervisors, and by the leaders of his party he was offered a nomination to the State Legislature, when a nomination meant election. But this he declined, preferring a less conspicuous place in life. His church used him in various places, His delight was in the Sunday School, He was superintendent of Cross Roads S. S., and when the Castalia Union S. S., was organized March 30th, l879, he became the Superintendent. On December 25th, 1879, the officers and teachers showed their appreciation by presenting him an autograph album in which they, with their classes, subscribed their names. His own dedicatory words were, "May all the names herein recorded, appear in the Lamb’s Great Book of Life," signed "Superintendent” This thought was characteristic of his life.
As S. S. Superintendent. Three things distinguished him, First, punctuality, he was always on time. Second, preparedness, his{illegible} were mastered, his black-board diagrams were pointed, and his brief talks earnest. Third, enthusiasm. He had a fine school.
A noble man has fallen, but it is not forever. We shall see him bye and bye,
