Postville Herald, Fri., 17 Jan. 1919.

Daniel Angus McMartin was born in St. Andrews, Argentine county, Parish Quebec, Canada, October 11, 1832. He came to Winneshiek county, Iowa, in 1852. September 11, 1861, he enlisted in Company I, Ninth Iowa Infantry, and served until 1864, when he was discharged at East Point, Alabama.

February 18, 1861, he was married to Julia S Brush and to this union were born four sons and five daughters, namely: Frank C. of Bridgewater, South Dakota; Mrs. Theodosia Dresser of Postville, Iowa; Mrs. Elsie Kobriger of Castalia, Iowa; Burt, Jessie and Edith are at home; Elmer E. is with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. The wife preceded the deceased to the other world about ten years ago, the eldest girl, Effie, died in childhood, and Willis died in the Spanish American war in 1901.

Mr. McMartin was a fine old gentleman and had many friends in and about Castalia, as evidenced by the large concourse of people who gathered in Castalia to attend the funeral services. Beautiful floral wreaths and bouquets decorated the casket and rostrum and the room was tastefully decorated with American flags. The services were conducted by the Rev. N. F. Hicks, pastor of the United double quartet furnished the music and Miss Alma Uhley presided at the piano. The soldiers from Castalia and Postville who had just returned home had an important part in the exercises and escorted the body to the cemetery and military honors were given at the grave.

The children and fourteen grandchildren have the sympathy of the friends and neighbors. The body was laid to rest in Bloomfield cemetery.
