Elaine W. Jacobson, 83, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away April 5, 2012, at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, Iowa. She was born on September 11, 1928, at home in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Bernice (Jones) Watson.
Elaine grew up on the family farm by Crane Creek near Saratoga, Iowa. She graduated from Riceville High School in 1946. Elaine started her 47 year teaching career at Howard County one room country schools, teaching K-8th grade students. She became a farmer’s wife when she married Burdette Jacobson on April 24, 1950, at St. Stephens Church in Chester, Iowa; he preceded her in death on October 3, 1997.
Elaine took a small break from teaching to raise their two children. When she resumed her teaching career, she taught K-8th grades at a one room country school north of Cresco. When the country schools closed in 1963, she went to Cresco and taught 5th grade. Elaine received her teaching degree from Upper Iowa University in 1967. She continued teaching 5th grade for the Howard-Winneshiek School District until she retired in 1997. Elaine went on to substitute teach for another 10 years. Although teaching was her first love, she had many other interests. She was an avid reader, liked deer hunting and collecting antiques. Elaine made many batches of cookies and bread. She enjoyed going to stock car races; she especially enjoyed cheering for her favorite driver Tom Schmitt. Elaine meticulously tended her numerous beautiful flower gardens. She loved baby animals and tried her best to save every one of them. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren lit up her life.
Elaine is survived by her son, Byron Jacobson of Cresco; daughter, Niane (John) Meyer of Tama; granddaughter Chris (Doug) Lange of Dubuque; grandson John (Yaneth) of Iowa City; great-granddaughters, Rahne McIntire, Grace Lange, Skyla Meyer and Ashley Meyer; sister, Shirley Sizer of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Evelyn Watson of Riceville; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Bernice; brother, Carrol Watson; and brother-in-law, Bill Sizer.
