Gordon Anderson

Gordon Anderson, 84, of Decorah, died at home Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012. Funeral services are at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 5, at Decorah Lutheran Church (309 Winnebago Street) in Decorah, with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Bryan Robertson. Organist is Kathy Murray. Solist is Hub Christen (“Goin’ Home”). Hymns are “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory.” Honorary casketbearers are all of Gordon’s grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Military rites at the church are by Bernatz – Symonds Am. Legion Post No. 163, Hamre – Giesen DAV Chapter No. 8, Helof Holm VFW Chapter No. 1977 and AmVets Post No. 96.

Gordon Parnell Anderson was born March 14, 1928, the son of Gilbert and Luella (Jaastad) Anderson, west of Decorah. Gordon was baptized and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church. He attended Madison County School No. 8 and farmed with his family. Gordon served in the Korean Conflict and returned to the area and worked for the railroad for a few years. He married Marian (Thayer) Neste Feb. 28, 1964, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Gordon farmed west of Decorah for many years, along with milking cows, raising beef cattle and hogs. Gordon was known as the neighbor who could “fix anything.” He enjoyed doing welding, woodworking, carpentry, plumbing and fixing anything mechanical. Gordon was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. It was Gordon’s wish to die in the same home he was born in and was thankful for his family to be able to take care of him at his home.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Marian Anderson, Decorah; one son, Paul (Beth) Anderson, Decorah; one daughter, Becky Anderson, Decorah; one step-son, Alan Neste, Decorah; four grandchildren: Meghan (Scott) Wiedow, Cory Anderson, Bryan Anderson and Anna Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Devin Wiedow; two sisters, Beverly (Carsten) Steen, Waterloo and Frances (Emil) Frana, Decorah; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Robert Grindland, Seattle, Wash.; Anita Anderson, Cedar Rapids; Helen (Ken) Miller, West Union; Dale (Nora) Thayer, Decorah; Ron Thayer, N.J.; Mae Anne (Don) Potter, Elma; Jeanette (Marvin) Schafer, St. Charles, Minn.; and Chris Thayer, Sarasota, Fla., along with many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Luella (Jaastad) Anderson; six sisters: Irene (Gary) Groth; Loretta (Marcelline) Phillips; Clara (Leon) Williams; Pauline (Ken) Keune; Almeda Grindland; and Katherine (Eldon) Holten; two brothers, Herman (Lois) Anderson and Donald Anderson; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Thayer; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Marcella (Delmar) Brooks, William “Bill” (Joyce) Thayer; Robert Thayer; Lorraine (Ken) Lawver and Ralph Thayer.
