Mark Abraham Robert Kuhn, M. D. died Aug. 27, 2012, in Winter Park, Fla., surrounded by family. Visitation and a reception celebrating the interesting and longlived life of Mark is Friday, Sept. 7, from 6-9 p.m. at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, 7520 Aloma Ave. Winter Park, FL 407-677-5091. The funeral Mass is Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church’s Chapel 526 North Park Ave. Winter Park, FL 407-647-3392. The interment is at Glen Haven Memorial Park Winter Park, Fla., immediately following Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation be made to projecthope.org. He was born July 12, 1920, in Decorah, to Leo Cornelius Kuhn and Helga Christensen Kuhn. His sister, Rosemary Cooney, predeceased him. Mark earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. His father inspired him to become a physician. He graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1944. He interned at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla. He graduated from the University of Iowa urology program where he trained under two pioneers in urological surgery: Dr. Rubin H. Flocks and Dr. Nathaniel G. Alcock. Mark practiced urology in Waterloo for several years before moving to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he practiced for the rest of career until his retirement in 1980 to DeLand, Fla.

He was a certified member of the American Board of Urology and was active and devoted to all of his professional societies. He was chief of staff at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. for several years. Mark committed a significant portion of his professional life to medical missionary work. He was an inaugural member of Project HOPE (Health Of People Everywhere). He served on HOPE’s first medical service mission to Indonesia in 1960 and Vietnam in 1961. The governor of Florida honored him for this service. Other HOPE Projects he served on were in Peru-Ecuador, Guinea, West Africa and Ganado, Ariz. on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

As a devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Edward’s in Waterloo, St. Pius X and St. John the Baptist in Ft. Lauderdale and St. Peter’s in DeLand. Mark had a lifelong interest in investments. His spare time was often spent analyzing financial news. He was willing and available to give financial and medical advice to his family and friends. He loved traveling with his family. He was a skilled craftsman and enjoyed working on his cars and doing various carpentry projects around the house. He had a quick-witted sense of humor and a unique sense of style in the way he dressed. He was devoted to his family.

He is survived by Muriel, his wife of 67 years; and his children: Mark and Susan Kuhn and Janet McNamara; and his grandchildren: Elena Turner and Eric Kuhn, Charlie, Muriel and Rory McNamara and Sevilla and Thomas Trevisani, II; and his great-grandchildren, Alula and Stella Turner; as well as an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
