Ramona Svendsen

Ramona Ruth Svendsen, 82, died Jan. 1, 2012, at the Ossian Senior Hospice following an extended illness. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, followed by burial in Pleasant View Cemetery in rural Castalia. Visitation was 4 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home in Ossian.

Ramona R. Preuss was born April 15, 1929, on a farm near Frankville, to Edward and Florence (Schroeder) Preuss. She was baptized, confirmed and was a long time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. She spent much of her younger years as a resident of Castalia and married Norman Svendsen May 19, 1945. They farmed and raised their family just south of Ossian. Ramona loved to garden and took great care of the animals on the farm. She was an excellent cook and sewed many dresses for her five daughters. Her greatest joy was making a huge meal and watching everyone enjoy the fruits of her labor. She worked as a nurse at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville and the Ossian Senior Hospice. After retiring she quilted, enjoyed reading and made covered coat hangers and hand crocheted potholders, sharing them with family and friends. Ramona was an honest, good-natured, hard working and nurturing woman. Most dear to her was her family; she loved being mom, aunt, grandma and great-grandma.

Ramona is survived by daughters Dirinda (Wayne) Benzing of Ossian, Janell (Marc) Davis of Mason City, Connie (David) Rosendahl of Ventura and Judy (Allen) Kuboushek of Ridgeway; grandchildren: Richard and Gary VanWey, Matthew and Ben Dowell, Amanda and Andrew Davis, Justin and Kenneth Rosendahl, Sara (Kuboushek) Neuzil, Erin (Kuboushek) Jacobsen, Jacob and Lucas Kuboushek; and 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda McNally and sisters-in-law Nell Preuss, Vernice Svendsen and Mary Svendsen; one brother-in-law, John Svendsen and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband; one son, Norman Jr. along with one daughter, Anne Dowell; a brother, Harold Preuss; a sister, Juanita Monroe; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Robert McNalley, Merle Monroe, Rueben Svendsen, Art Svendsen, Lyle and Mildred (Svendsen) Zweibahmer, Harry and Arlette (Svendsen) Bachelder, Harley and Ellen (Svendsen) Thompson.

The family would like to thank the staff personnel at Wellington Place Assisted Living and Ossian Senior Hospice for their loving support to Ramona.

Condolences may be left with www.graufuneralhomes.com . Schmitz – Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
