Jo Ann Vine, age 79, of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, August 24, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 27, 2012, at the First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Chad Huebner presiding. Burial will be in the Russell Cemetery, rural Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 26, 2012, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., on Monday morning at the church. There will be a VFW Ladies Auxiliary Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m., at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon.

Jo Ann Goldie (Thompson) Vine was born on November 11, 1932 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Leonard and Clara (Moen) Thompson. She was baptized at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Parsonage, rural Decorah, Iowa, on December 4, 1932. She was confirmed on June 8, 1946, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Jo Ann attended public school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Harlan Vine on July 27, 1952, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, by Rev. T. H. Hoff. Jo Ann and Harlan have always lived in Decorah. Jo Ann was previously employed at Jack and Jill Food Market and at Camcar in Decorah. In her retirement years, she did food and merchandise demonstrations at Fareway and Walmart. Jo Ann served as president of the 9th District VFW Auxiliary for three years, taught Sunday School for nineteen years and was on the Social Concerns Committee, as well as a founder of the Food Pantry at First Lutheran. She also served as Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge #175. Jo Ann was a member of the First Lutheran Church since the age of three, also the VFW #1977 Ladies Auxiliary and the Oneota Rebekah Lodge #175.

Jo Ann’s survivors include her husband, Harlan Vine, Decorah, IA. Two sons: Lowell (Debra Garvin) Vine, Colorado Springs, CO, and Duane Vine, Decorah, IA. Two grandchildren: Angela (Lee) Lindstrom, Cresco, IA, and Matthew Vine, Calmar, IA. Two great grandchildren: Wyatt Dale and Zoey Marie Lindstrom. Two sisters-in-law: Priscilla Thompson and Vivian Vine, both of Mabel, MN. Four brothers-in-law: Carleton (Mavis) Vine, St. Cloud, FL; Eldon (Kathy) Vine, Clear Lake, IA; Alvin Vine, Decorah, IA; and Robert (Ruby) Vine, Blaine, MN, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents: Leonard Thompson in 1970 and Clara (Moen) Thompson in 1987. Her brother: Dale Thompson in 1987. Two nephews: Davis Thompson in 1982 and James Vine in 1979. Her father and mother-in-law: Theodore Vine in 1966 and Myrtle (Sharp) Vine in 1978. Two nieces: Peggy Vine in infancy and Connie (Vine) Wilson in 2009. One brother-in-law: Darrell Vine in 2009. Two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Vine Kallevang in 2004 and her husband Durwin in 2008 and Donna Lovstuen Vine in 2011.
