Gerald “Gerry” Bucheit, age 92, of Calmar, IA, died on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 3, 2012, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Schluter-Balik Funeral Home – French Chapel, 202 South Washington St., in Calmar, IA. There will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. There will also be visitation after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning.

Memorials may given in memory of Gerry to Ossian Senior Hospice, 114 Fisher Avenue, Ossian, IA 52161 or Opportunity Homes, 606 Iowa Avenue, Decorah, IA 52101.

Gerald “Gerry” Bucheit was born June 14, 1920, on a farm near Festina, the son of Alphonse and Olivia (Schneberger) Bucheit. He received his education in Catholic Schools in Festina, Spillville, St. Lucas, and Calmar. Gerry went to work for his uncle, George Bucheit, Sr., in his grocery store in Calmar. He continued working with Bucheit Produce, Golden Crown Farm, and NorEg until his retirement after 54 years of involvement with these businesses. He was united in marriage to Mary Huber on October 14, 1942, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. They lived in Calmar all of their married life raising their family. After Mary suffered a stroke in 1986, Gerry served as a devoted caregiver until her death in 1990. After his retirement, he worked part time in the office of Calmar Manufacturing. Gerry was a member of the Calmar Volunteer Fire Department for many years and served as its secretary. He also served on the Calmar City Council for almost 30 years. Gerry was a member of Calmar Senior Citizens and St. Aloysius Catholic Church, where he lectored and was a Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was a long time St. Louis Cardinals fan. Most of all, Gerry enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gerry is survived by his son, Robert (Virginia) Bucheit of Lakewood, Colorado, and their daughters, Shalea (Paul) Hardison and children, Paityn and Brock of Castle Rock, Colorado, Alana Bucheit of Denver, Colorado; his daughter, Janet (Dennis) Palsgrove of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and their sons, Patrick (Jenny) Palsgrove and children, Aidan and Zachary of Chicago, Illinois, Michael (Heather) Brown-Palsgrove and son, Isaac of Chicago, Illinois, and their daughter, Megan Palsgrove of Denver, Colorado; his son, Tom (Mary) Bucheit of Osage, Iowa, and their sons, Sean (Lynn) Bucheit and daughters, Harlow and Rowan of North Liberty, Iowa, Dan (Abby) Bucheit of Ankeny, Iowa; his daughter, Sue (Dale) Lansing of Ossian, Iowa, and their daughters, Erin (Ben) Mettille and children Isabelle, Irey and Eliyas of Lansing, Iowa, Andrea Lansing of Decorah, Iowa, Sari Lansing of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Jadie Lansing of Ossian; a sister, Joan Schissel of Ossian, Iowa; a brother, Claude Bucheit of Decorah, Iowa; a sister- in-law, Joan (Don) Howland of Rochester, Minnesota, along with many nieces and nephews; and close friends, Philip (Dianne) French and family of Calmar.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Bucheit in 1990; his son, Bill Bucheit in 1990; a sister, Joyce Bucheit; and two brothers, Quintin “Barney” Bucheit and Adrian Bucheit.

Gerry’s family would like to thank the staff of Ossian Senior Hospice for the loving care that was given to him.
