Lois Smith, age 73, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, July 2, 2012, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Nancy Solomonson presiding.
Friends may call after 1:00 p.m., at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home.
Lois Yvonne (Barth) Smith was born September 18, 1938, the daughter of Raymond and Myrtle (Bender) Barth near Mabel, MN. Lois was baptized October 9, 1938 by Pastor Carl Losen and confirmed November 30, 1952 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust. She attended the Locust Country School and then graduated from Decorah High School. Lois married Robert Smith on August 28, 1962 in St. Louis, MO. To this union one daughter, Dawn, was born. Lois worked various jobs while her husband served in the US Coast Guard. Together they lived in Missouri, Hawaii, California, New York, Texas, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and North Carolina. Lois enjoyed her dogs, painting, playing cards, fishing and going to the Casinos. Lois was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust.
Lois is survived by her daughter: Dawn Smith, Cape May, New Jersey. Her mother: Myrtle Barth, Decorah, IA. Three sisters: Arlys Hexom, Decorah, IA; Jerene (Roger) Jacobson, Prescott, AZ; and Darlene (Roger) Bjerke, Waukesha, WI. One brother: Lyle (Mary) Barth, Decorah, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Lois is also survived by her special dog, Scooter and her cat Tabitha (aka “That Damn Cat”).
Lois was preceded in death by her husband: Robert D. Smith on October 22, 1980. Her father: Raymond Barth on January 17, 1998. One brother-in-law: Charles Hexom on April 24, 2012. One great nephew: Erik Baumler in 1995.
