Funeral services for Darlene (Szabo) Schultz were held Friday, April 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. Pastor Dave L. Lenth officiated. Casket bearers were Daryl, Jeff and Terry Szabo, Kevin Smith, Myron and Tom Schultz and Duane Leuenberger.

Darlene Marie (Szabo) Schultz, the daughter of Steve and Laura (Reisner) Szabo, was born February 28, 1928, at Oelwein, Iowa. She passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in the Oneota Care Center at Decorah, Iowa. She had reached the age of 74 years, one month, and 18 days.

She attended the Castalia School and was graduated from Postville High School in 1946.

On February 27, 1954 she was married to LaVern Luver Schultz. To this union 4 children were born, Steven, Stanley, Guy and Mari Lynn, who joined a step-son Daniel Schultz.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, LaVern, who died in 1971, two brothers, Theodore Szabo, William Szabo, 2 sisters, Agnes Smith, and Marilyn (Duane) Wander, sisters-in-law, Shirley (Victor) Szabo, Mary (Bob) Szabo, and Violet (E.K.) Smith, and brothers-in-law, Everett (Orlene) Schultz, Ralph (Vila Mae) Schultz, Ronald (Wilmarie) Schultz, Kenneth Schultz, and Chuck Schultz.

Surviving are her children, Steve Schultz and Stan (Cindy) Schultz, all of Postville, Mari Lynn (Mike) Martin of Castalia, Iowa, and Guy (Michelle) Schultz of Marion, Iowa; and a stepson, Daniel (LaDonna) Schultz of White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Randal, Shawn and Derek Schultz; Amy (Mario) Schultz, Heidi (Jeremy) Hilgerson; Drew and Claudia Schultz; 2 step-granddaughters, Kari Lee and Deanne Schultz; 2 great grandchildren, Jenna Hilgerson and Gabriel Loera; 6 brothers, Robert of Castalia, Edward of Clermont, Eugene (Jean) of Castalia, Dayle (Nadine) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Victor of Castalia and Leon (Fayne) of Postville; a sister, Diane (Bill) Buddenberg of Castalia; sisters-in-law, Betty (Bill) Szabo of Postville, Ernestine (Kenneth) Schultz of Castalia, and Barbara (Chuck) Schultz of Corpus Christi, Texas; brothers-in-law, Earl Smith of Castalia, and Duane Wander of Riverside, California.

Darlene was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. She became a resident of the Oneota Care Center in 1971. Darlene enjoyed having her children and grandchildren come to visit her, and she enjoyed the activities at the center as well.
