Mrs. A. P. Anderson
Ela Berdahl, daughter of Ingebrigt and Gertrude Berdahl, was born Jan. 25, 1854, in Feios i Sogn, Norway. Being one of 14 children, she was sent, at the age of 6 years, to live with her aunt and uncle, the late Mr. and Mrs. Edlend Sime, parents of Mr. T. E. Sime of Ridgeway. With Mr. and Mrs. Sime she came to America at the age of 13 years, and lived with them until she was confirmed. She was confirmed in the old Egge church by Rev. Nils Brandt. After her confirmation, she shifted for herself, seeking employment wherever she could find it, and previous to her marriage spent three years in Chicago.
Jan. 25, 1875, she was married to Andrew P. Anderson of this community, they being the second couple married in the old Lincoln church by the late Rev. Nels Brandt. They settled on a farm, five miles south of Ridgeway, which Mr. Anderson had previously bought, and lived there until the spring of 1920, when they moved to Ridgeway, and have resided since.
Eleven children were born to this union, five having preceded their mother in death. With the husband and father, the following children survive: Peter A. Anderson, Draper, S.D.; Anna (Mrs. John Albertson); Amelia (Mrs. C. T. Trytten); Iver, Mathilda (Mrs. H. M. Halvorson); Caroline (Mrs. John Brenno), all of Ridgeway and vicinity. One sister, Mrs. Jacob Vangsness of Rugby, N.D., two brothers, John Berdahl of Estevan, Sack., Can., and Johan Berdahl living in Norway, twenty seven grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Anderson passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1937, one week after she had reached her 83d birthday, and had quietly celebrated with her husband, their 62d wedding anniversary. She had been in failing health for several years, but death came as a relief from illness and much suffering since she became suddenly ill on Jan. 8th, during which she had been faithfully and tenderely{sic} cared for by her children.
Mrs. Anderson has always been a faithful member of the Lincoln Lutheran church, and an ardent co-worker in the Ladies’ Aid during the years her health permitted. She will be greatly missed in her home and community by all her family and friends. Blessed be her memory.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon from the home and at the Lincoln church, with Rev. M. B. Quill and the Rev. D. C. Jordahl officiating. Music was furnished by the men’s quartet. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Five grandsons, the Messrs. Arthur Albertson, Archie Anderson, Norman Trytten, Lester Anderson, Adolph Brenno with Orlando Sime, acted as pall bearers.
