Edward Riha, 79, services held

Funeral services for Edward “Eddie” Riha of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Interment was in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church Cemetery at Decorah. Pallbearers were: Erik Riha, Brad Riha, Karla Puffer, Jason Hackman, Darik Muhlenbruck, and John Foreman, Jr. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Edward, 79, died Monday, December 10, 2001 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Edward Frank Riha was born February 14, 1922 in Fort Atkinson, the son of Frank and Mary (Franzen) Riha. At a young age, his family moved to the St. Lucas area and he attended St. Luke’s Catholic School. Eddie then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving from 1942-1946

On May 5, 1947 he married Agnes Holthaus at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Festina. They farmed for a few years near New Hampton and then moved to Ridgeway, where they farmed for forty-five years, retiring and moving to Decorah in 1994.

Eddie was member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and his dog, Chester.

He is survived by his wife Agnes; two sons: Frank of Decorah and Gene of Ridgeway; five daughters: Rosemary Hackman of Cedar Rapids, Carol Spalla of Foundation, MN, Betty Foreman of St. Lucas, Connie Muhlenbruch{sic} of Mediapolis, and Lori Riha of Rochester, MN; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Loretta Rausch and Barbara Jirak, both of Fort Atkinson; and five brothers: James Croatt of St. Lucas, Matt Riha of Cresco, Leonard Riha of Madison, WI, and Francis Riha and Daniel Riha, both of Waucoma

DECORAH - Edward "Eddie" Riha, 79, Decorah, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 at his home following a lengthy illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Decorah with Rev. Gary Kraphl presiding. Music was provided by Alan Sensor as organist and Sue English as soloist. Hymn selections included "Here I Am Lord", "On Eagle's Wings", "Lord, When You Came to the Seashore" and "America the Beautiful".
Interment was in St. Benedict's Cemetery, Decorah with Military Rites by Helof-Holm VFW Post #1977 and Bernatz-Symonds, American Legion Post #163. Casket bearers were" Erik Riha, Brad Riha, Karla Puffer, Jason Hackman, Darik Muhlenbruck and John Foreman, Jr.
Edward Frank Riha was born Feb. 14, 1922 in Fort Atkinson, the son of Frank and Mary (Franzen) Riha. At a young age, his family moved to the St. Lucas area and he attended St. Luke's Catholic School. Eddie then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving from 1942-1946. He married Agnes Holthaus on May 5, 1947 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina. They farmed for a few years near New Hampton and then moved to Ridgeway, where they farmed for 45 years, retiring and moving to Decorah in 1994. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and his little dog, Chester.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes, Decorah; two sons, Frank (Jo) Riha, Decorah and Gene (Judy) Riha, Ridgeway; five daughters, Rosemary (Ronald) Hackman, Cedar Rapids, Carol (A1 "Tony") Spalla, Fountain, MN, Betty (John) Foreman, St. Lucas, Connie (Alan) Muhlenbruck, Mediapolis and Lori Riha and Wade Fisher, Rochester, MN; 17. grandchildren; five great- granddchildren; two sisters, Loretta Rausch and Barbara (James) Jirak, both of Fort Atkinson; five brothers, James (Verena) Croatt, St. Lucas, Matt(Mary) Riha, Cresco, Leonard (Mildred) Riha, Madison, WI, Francis (Regina) Riha and Daniel (Shirley) Riha, both of Waucoma; one brother-in-law, William Brannon, Waucoma and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one grandson, Steven Hackman; a sister, Angeline Brannon and a brother-in-law, Alex Rausch.
