Services for Ove Melaas, 88, were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Madison Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. Pastor Phillip Olson officiated with interment in the Madison Cemetery. French and Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ove Henry Melaas was born February 17, 1909 on a farm near Ridgeway, the son of Inga Gustina Gilbertson and Gilbert Hans Melaas. He was baptized at home on March 2, 1909 and confirmed on May 8, 1924 at Madison Lutheran Church.
He attended rural Winneshiek County schools until his father, Gilbert became ill and died on Oct. 21, 1924. He then farmed with his mother and sister, Myrtle Larson, at the farm he lived on all his life until retirement in 1971.
On May 25, 1940, Ove married Gunhild Idella Winger at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. They had two sons, Orvin and Larry. In March of 1971, Ove and Idella retired and moved to Ridgeway. Two years later, on Feb. 14, 1973, Idella died from cancer.
On August 27, 1974, Ove married Velma Thompson and moved to the city of Decorah where he lived until his death.
Ove is survived by his wife, Velma; two sons, Orvin of St. Paul, MN and Larry of Savanna, IL; five grandchildren; one stepson, Carl Thompson of Decorah and four step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Idella, parents, and his sister.

Decorah- Ove Melaas, 88, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. Burial: church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at French & Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Velma; and two sons, Orvin of Minneapolis and Larry of Savanna, Ill.
