Tevaleen “Tevy” Winger, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, May 26, 2008, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2008, at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning. There will be a VFW Ladies Auxiliary service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the First Lutheran Church, Wellington Place Nursing Home or to the Food Pantry at First Lutheran.
Tevaleen Marie “Tevy” (Berge) Winger was born on December 27, 1925, the daughter of Paul Jorgen and Palma (Johnson) Berge in Decorah, Iowa. Tevy graduated from Decorah High School in 1943 and then worked at Gross’ Restaurant. Tevy married Telford Winger on June 15, 1947 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Tevy was a homemaker and did daycare, before working in the lunch program in the Decorah Schools. She worked for many years at JC Penney in Decorah. Tevy enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, quilting and playing cards. Tevy was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where she was a Deaconess and a member of the ladies circle. She also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and volunteered at the Winneshiek Medical Center and other for other groups.
Tevy’s survivors include her two daughters: Alice (Duane) Ruffridge, Decorah, IA and Ruth (Rob) McDowell, Earlville, IA. Five grandchildren: David (Lisa) Ruffridge, Julie (Parnell) Ellingson, Craig Roney, Lee Roney and Crystal (James) Brandenburg. Three step-grandchildren: Robyn (Tim) Ross, Amanda and Jacob McDowell. Fourteen great grandchildren: Kiley, Alyssa & Addison Ruffridge; Ashley, Emily, Sara & Justin Ellingson; Jessica, Christopher & Zachary Roney; Samantha, Blaize, Storm and Jarik Brandenburg. Two sisters: Goldie (Gordon) Hjelman and Marian Strong, both of Blooming Prairie, MN. One brother: Gordon (Elaine) Berge, Waterville, MN.
Tevy was preceded in death by her parents: Paul Jorgen & Palma Berge. Her grandparents: John & Martha Johnson. Her husband: Telford Winger on September 24, 1996. One grandson: Daniel. Two sisters: Norma Jean Berge and Betty Enright. Two brothers-in-law: Carl Strong and Jake Enright.
