Eugene M. Wicks, age 83, of Decorah, Iowa, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Regional Health Services of Howard County, Cresco, Iowa, of Binswanger disease.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, October 6, 2008 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Joan A. Mau with inurnment in Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, IA.
Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
Eugene M. “Gene” Wicks was born March 18, 1925, in Burr Oak, IA, the son of Cecil J. and Agnes (Underbakke) Wicks. He was baptized and confirmed at Burr Oak Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Harmony High School, Harmony, MN and a 1953 graduate of Luther College with a degree in Business Administration. During WWII he served with the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 in the Pacific Theater.
On October 12, 1946 Gene was united in marriage to Anvy Bower in St. Louis, MO. This union was blessed with six children: Dennis, Steven, Diane, Michael, Cathy, and Gary.
Gene had worked for many years as an insurance agent with Lutheran Brotherhood, a real estate agent for Decorah Bank and Realty and in finance with IDS. He retired in 1987.
Gene was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he had served as treasurer. He was also a member of the Son’s of Norway and VFW. He enjoyed coin collecting, and in particular he liked spending time with his family: camping, fishing, and attending athletic events and concerts while the children were in school.
Gene had lived at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, IA since January, 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Agnes Wicks.
Gene is survived by his wife, Anvy of Decorah, IA; six children: Dennis (Jan) Wicks of Freeport, IL, Steven (Charlotte) Wicks of Marion, AR, Diane (Doug) Osborn of Decorah, IA, Michael (Margie) Wicks of Lincoln, NE, Cathy (Larry) Kennedy of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Gary (John Lamothe) Wicks of Washington, DC; eight grandchildren: Dan (Jen) Wicks of Davidson, NC, Nate Wicks and fiancé, Amy Badalamenti of Palatine, IL, Jason Wicks of Des Moines, IA, Kym Wicks of Lincoln, NE, Brynn, Shalane, Lexi Brinkman of Cedar Rapids, IA and Michael Kennedy of Cedar Rapids, IA; one sister, Eileen Mellom of St. Paul, MN; and nieces and nephews.
