Nina E. Wangsness, age 94, of Mabel, Minnesota and formerly of rural Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel following a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, by Rev. David Andreae, with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10 A.M. Wednesday at the church.

Nina Elvera Wangsness was born July 26, 1911, near Colton, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Froyness) Hjelle. She graduated from High School in Garretson, South Dakota with the Class of 1928. Following school, Nina worked as a housekeeper in Madison, South Dakota. In her earlier years, she was an amateur artist and had been accepted at an art school in Minneapolis, MN.

She was united in marriage to Elvin Theodore Wangsness on November 5, 1939, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Clayton, Sharon and Barbara.

Nina and Elvin farmed together in Howard and Winneshiek Counties in Iowa, including a number of years in Highland Township in Winneshiek County. In the spring of 1974, they retired from farming and moved into a home in Decorah. Elvin preceded Nina in death on January 20, 1999.

Nina was a member of Highland Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Aid and Church Circle. Nina loved to sing and was deeply committed to her faith in God. Her family was an important part of her life.

Nina died Saturday, May 27, 2006 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minnesota at the age of 94 years, where she had been a resident for the last twelve years.

Survivors include her three children, Clayton and his wife Harriet Wangsness of rural Spring Grove, MN; Sharon and her husband Patrick Drew of Decorah, IA and Rev. Barbara Wangsness and her husband Rev. Natanael Lizarazo of Renner, S.D.; six grandchildren, Benjamin Kidd, Jennifer Kidd, Erik Wangsness, Anne Wangsness and her fiancé Justin Henry, Jon (Tessia) Wangsness and Alicia Lizarazo.

Nina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elvin; a grandson, Jesus Lizarazo; a sister, Gundhild Strom; a brother, Donald Hjelle; a half sister, Julia Sanders and four half brothers, Herman, Palmer, John and Roy Hjelle.
