Gladys V. Usgaard, age 93, of Decorah, died of complications of age on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at her home in Decorah.

There will be a private family service. Fjelstul Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys Viola Hovden Usgaard was born January 6, 1915 near Mahnomen, Minnesota, the daughter to Knut and Thea (Severson) Hovden. She was baptized at Faith Hospital, Faith, Minnesota and confirmed at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa by Reverend D. C. Jordahl. Gladys attended school in rural Winneshiek County.

She was united in marriage with Selmer “Sam” Usgaard on July 7, 1942 at Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gladys and Sam owned and operated the Springer Hotel and Café in Decorah for many years. They were members of Decorah Lutheran Church where Gladys had been active in women’s groups. They were also members of the Elks Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam on November 12, 1964; four brothers: Carmen, Casper, Arthur and Edwin Hovden; and two sisters: Mabel Wangsness and Aleda Hove.

Gladys is survived by many nieces and nephews.
