David C. Tjostem, age 44, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah of cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. James Glesne and Rev. Allen Vik with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Tuesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Wednesday one hour before services at the church.
David Carl Tjostem was born November 21, 1963 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of John and Karen (Voxland) Tjostem. David was a 1982 graduate of Decorah High School. He received a B.A. degree in physics and mathematics from Luther College in 1986 and a M.A. degree in physics from Iowa State University in Ames in 1988. In the summer of 2007 he received a B.A. degree in Information Technology from Kaplan University where he achieved Summa Cum Laude.
He was united in marriage with Kathy (Swift) Johnson on July 15, 2000 at Decorah Lutheran Church by Reverend James Glesne and his brother, Reverend Paul Tjostem. This union was blessed with one child, Kaitlin. Their family also included Patrick and Kasia.
Dave taught math and physics classes at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Iowa for 15 years. He then taught at Western Technical College in LaCrosse, WI for two years. He was a tax preparer at Hacker and Nelson Co. for two years and then he worked at Complete Consulting in Decorah for a short period of time.
He was member of Decorah Lutheran Church. He was an avid fisherman, liked playing card games and loved spending time with his family at the cabin in Minnesota. He also enjoyed music and playing the guitar and he was a great fan of Iowa State, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Carl and Linda Tjostem and Melvin and Alice Voxland.
Dave is survived by his wife, Kathy; three children: Patrick and Kasia Johnson and Kaitlin Tjostem; his parents, John and Karen Tjostem of Decorah, Iowa; one brother, Reverend Paul Tjostem of Steele, North Dakota; one sister, Ann (Jim) Kephart of Decorah, Iowa; one uncle, Philip Voxland of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one aunt, Sylvia (Edward) Christopherson of Alexandria, Minnesota; his mother- and father-in-law, Douglas Swift of Rapid City, South Dakota and Barbara Swift of Webster, South Dakota; and also by cousins, nieces and nephews.
