Amanda Marion Irene (Danielson) Swenson was born January 6, 1914, at home in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel A. and (Beret) Marie (Drievold) Danielson. She was baptized at Hauge Lutheran Church on February 1, 1914, and confirmed on May 13, 1928, by Pastor Ole Glesne at Decorah Lutheran Church. Amanda attended rural school in Canoe Township and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1931. Prior to her marriage, Amanda taught in Winneshiek County rural schools and worked at Dotseth’s bakery in Decorah.
Amanda was united in marriage with Kyrre Swenson on October 10, 1939, at Hauge Lutheran Church. To this union, three children were born: Karen Anne (1940), Ellen Louise (1942) and Kavin Rhys (1950). Amanda and Kyrre raised their family and farmed together on his parent’s farm in Canoe Township for over 45 years. In addition, Amanda worked in the food service at Luther College from 1957 to 1976.
Amanda had many talents and interests including cooking and baking (especially lefse, rommegrot and apple pies), sewing, crocheting and needlework, crossword puzzles, cards and table games and visiting, visiting, visiting! She greatly enjoyed her friends, dancing and experiencing life! Amanda was devoted to and treasured her family, celebrating holidays and birthdays, attending her granddaughters’ school functions and sporting activities, vacationing with family and sharing her Norwegian heritage.
She was a faithful member of Hauge Lutheran Church, where she served in many capacities over the years including Ladies’ Aid, W/ELCA, Sunday school, bazaars, church dinners and circles. As an active member of the Luren Ladies’ Auxiliary, Amanda found much enjoyment in this fellowship, especially traveling on concert tours including trips to Norway and her work at the Luren “fair stand.”
Amanda and Kyrre retired from farming and moved to Decorah in 1986, enjoying their retirement years on Mechanic Street. Amanda moved to the Arlin Falk Assisted Living Apartments in March of 2003 and became a resident of the Eastern Star Home in January 2006. Amanda died peacefully at the Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice surrounded by her family at the age of 92 on September 3, 2006, after a short illness.
Survivors include her three children and their families: Karen (Mel) Lee of Decorah and daughters, Marit (Dan) Lee-Dohse, Jens and Signe of Chanhassen, MN; Dr. Anne-Kristi Lee of St. Stephen, MN; Kari (Zac) Lee-Zimmermann of Cascade, WI.
