Emilie May Souhrada, age 67, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa, after years of very poor health.
A family inurnment service will be held in the spring at the New Oregon Cemetery, rural Cresco, Iowa.
The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.
Emilie May Souhrada was born on February 26, 1942, the daughter of George and Emma Mary (Perry) Souhrada Jr., in Saratoga, Iowa. Emilie attended Saratoga #6 and Orleans #5 & #6 country schools and then graduated from Cresco High School in 1960. Emilie worked for Turner Mortuary Equipment in Cedar Rapids, until she enlisted in the US Navy on March 2, 1962. She served in the Great Lakes area until she was medically discharged on October 4, 1962. Emilie married Earl Rupert in Ohio, they later divorced. She married John Shanego in South Dakota. She lived in Florida, Colorado and Minnesota. Emilie was a member of the eleventh generation of the Decedents of the Mayflower.
Emilie’s survivors include her three daughters: Kimberly (Dan) Elke, Gaylord, MN; Paula (Joel) Estrada, Antioch, CA; Mary Marino, Fort Collins, CO. Seven grandchildren: Joshua, Zachariah, Alexis, Jared, Adrianna, Alano and Maria. One great grandchild: Reece. One sister: Rosemary (Gary) Knutson, Decorah, IA. Two brothers: Charles Souhrada, Fountain, MN, and David (Rhonda) Souhrada, Madison, SD, along with many nieces and nephews.
Emilie was preceded in death by her parents: George & Emma Mary (Perry) Souhrada Jr. Her husband: John Shanego in 1990. One brother: Francis Souhrada in infancy. One nephew: Douglas Knutson. One niece: Lorena Souhrada. Her grandparents: George & Anna (Coufal) Souhrada, Sr. and Bertram & Lydia (Rowlee) Perry.
