Joan Sloan, age 80, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at her home following a sudden illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 22, 2010, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2009, and on Friday morning from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Friday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Joan Esther (McDonald) Sloan was born on September 20, 1929, the daughter of Lloyd and Florence (Weber) McDonald in Peoria, Illinois. Joan attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Schools in Gilbertville, graduating in 1947. She then attended Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, graduating in 1950, as a registered nurse. Joan married Neal Sloan on September 19, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, Iowa. She worked for Dr. Luke Faber in Dubuque, as his office nurse for a few years. Following their move to Decorah, she started working for Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in 1958. Joan logged in as the delivery room nurse for the first time in November 1959. 30 years later, Joan had 1048 births to her credit! Additionally she was involved in a variety of community health education activities including babysitting classes, Reach to Recovery, and diabetes education. Joan loved to play 500 and had been in the same card club for over 35 years. She was a life long St. Louis Cardinals fan and the accumulated memorabilia is still enshrined in her home. Joan was happiest in the kitchen and no one ever left her home hungry as love equaled food. As her grandchildren grew up, Joan was an enthusiastic and vocal supporter at sporting events and activities. Following Neal's death, Joan found solace in volunteering with students at St Benedict's School. She was known by all as "Grandma Sloan" Joan was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and St. Bridget's ladies circle.

Joan’s survivors include her seven children: Patricia (Larry) Welo, Mt. Horeb, WI; Dianne (Don) Frazer, Oelwein, IA; Mary Sloan-Edwards (Tom Edwards), Anchorage, AK; Michael (Roberta) Sloan, Rochester, MN; Julie Anderson (Jim Maloney), Decorah, IA; Jean (Dave) Wise, Decorah, IA; and David (Elizabeth) Sloan, Ankeny. Fifteen grandchildren: Aaron, Evan and Claire Welo: Shae & Will Frazer; Joanna Edwards; Tyler & Colin Sloan; Kara, Nate & Brinn Anderson; Ethan & Jared Wise and Laura & Benjamin Sloan. One great grandchild: Mayson Neal Mitchell and another great grandbaby due in June 2010. Three sisters: Darlene McDonald, Arlene (Paul) Jaehrling, and Judy (Mike) McCarville, all of Waterloo, IA. Five sisters-in-law: Irene (Neal) Meyer, West Des Moines, IA; Dorothy (Arthur) Schultz, Urbandale, IA; Kay Sloan, Dubuque, IA; Elaine Sloan, Waverly, IA; and Pam Sloan, Minneapolis, MN. Three brothers-in-law: Gerald Sloan, Ponca City, OK; Floyd (Joan) Sloan, Phoenix, AZ; Jack Holverson, North Liberty, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents: Lloyd and Florence (Weber) McDonald. Her husband: Neal Sloan on August 8, 2000 and one sister: Jean McDonald in infancy.
