Melody Simmonds, age 16, of Decorah, IA, died Monday, May 28, 2012, following an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at the First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway St., Decorah, IA, with Rev. Chad Huebner presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday, June 4, 2012, Schluter Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, and also on Tuesday after 1:00 p.m., at the church.

Melody Isabeau Simmonds was born on January 29, 1996, in Bellflower, CA, the daughter of Mark and Lillian (Taracena) Simmonds. Melody attended Decorah Community Schools and just had completed her sophomore year. She enjoyed being a cheerleader for football and wrestling. She also participated in track and tennis. Melody enjoyed playing her guitar, the piano and Rock Band. Melody liked to be outdoors and enjoyed going tubing, canoeing, camping, skateboarding, as well as going to the movies and driving her car. She loved to hang out with her friends and to text them. She also worked at Pizza Ranch part-time.

Melody’s survivors include her parents: Lillian & Terry Quam, Decorah, IA, and her father: Mark (Katie Becker) Simmonds, Decorah, IA. Her siblings: Bleys Simmonds, Decorah, IA; Kent Wesley Simmonds, Waterloo, IA; Brandon Quam, Decorah, IA; Hazel Quam, Decorah, IA; and Dennise (Dan) Klutts, Mabel, MN. Niece and Nephew: Alexis & Fred Williams. Her grandparents: Elsy Lara, Downey, CA; Barbara MacKay Simmonds, St. Paul, MN; Kent (Lynne Sootheran) Simmonds, Decorah, IA; Doris Sweet, Decorah, IA, and Norman (Maxine) Quam, Ridgeway, IA. Great Grandparents: Lester (Dorothy) Engen, Decorah, IA. Aunts and Uncles: Mirna (Francisco Aviles) Taracena, Downey, CA; Naomi (Ian) Robertson, Scotland; Gustavo Taracena, Spain; Jeanette Simmonds, St. Paul, MN; Dennis (Tina Borcherding) Quam, Decorah, IA; Christy (Rich) Klimesh, Spillville, IA; and Karla (Jared) Kelly, Ossian, IA. Special friends: Dalia Visnjevic. Tony Visnjevic, Linda Shettler, Maria Demarest and Judy VanBeveren. Cousins: Michelle, Hoshi & Diego Aviles, and Andy Taracena, Starlette (fiancé, Dereck Moellers ) Klimesh, Brad & Ambriehl Klimesh, Brody & Kylie Kohrs and Kenzi Kelly, as well as many great aunts, uncles and a host of relatives and friends.

Melody was preceded in death by her grandfather: Manuel Taracena. Nephew: Anthony Williams. Great grandparents: Gustavo & Josefina Lara. Erlinda Taracena, Helen Engen, Milfred & Elsie Quam, Nina & Lee Simmonds, May & Edward MacKay. Uncle: Freddie Taracena. Cousin: Ashley Klimesh.
