Gordon C. Rovang, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Wellington Place in Decorah of a sudden illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 30, 2008 at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 29 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Friday at the church.

Gordon Curtis Rovang was born July 31, 1925 at home on the farm in Nordness, Iowa, the son of George and Ida (Tinjum) Rovang. He was baptized on September 13, 1925 and confirmed on June 4, 1939 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, IA. Gordon attended rural school at Nordness and attended Decorah High School. On November 9, 2006, he was one of several veterans who were presented with an honorary GED degree by Decorah High School. As a young man, Gordon hauled cream to Nordness and farmed on the home place.

He was united in marriage to June S. Fulsaas on October 20, 1950 at Madison Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, IA. This union was blessed with two sons: Dale and Dean.

Gordon served in the U.S. Army from October 27, 1950 to October 27, 1952, when he was honorably discharged as a sergeant. While in service he became an instructor in heavy equipment. After his service, Gordon farmed on the Madison Road and then in 1963, Gordon and June bought their own farm in the Madison Township where they lived for over forty years. He retired from farming in March 1986 and they moved into Decorah in June 2005.

Gordon attended Madison Lutheran Church and was a former council member. Gordon loved to plant corn and farming was his life. He also enjoyed fishing.

Gordon became a resident of Wellington Place in November 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Irvin, Reuben and George Jr.; and one brother-in-law, Gordon Fulsaas.

He is survived by his wife, June of Decorah; their two sons, Dale (Peggy) Rovang of Decorah and Dean (Patty) Rovang of Albuquerque, NM; a granddaughter, Sarah Rovang; a step-granddaughter, Laura (Jason) Lemke and their daughter Jenna of Decorah; three sisters-in-law: Delores Rovang of Decorah, Marian Rovang (Bill) Rude of Decorah and Joanne Fulsaas of Decorah; and two brothers-in-law: Merle (Laurice) Fulsaas of Decorah and Roy (Pat) Fulsaas of Decorah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
