Paul E. Quandahl, age 80, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in Waterloo Ridge Cemetery in rural Dorchester, Iowa, with full military honors.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 9 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be an Masonic Service at 6:00 P.M. Friends may also call after 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, one hour before services, at the Church.
Paul Edmund Quandahl was born February 4, 1928 at home in Quandahl, rural Allamakee County, Iowa, the son of Sander and Carrie (Osmundson) Quandahl. He was baptized on March 11, 1928 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church and confirmed on June 22, 1941 at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church. He attended rural schools of Allamakee County and graduated from Waukon High School with the class of 1945. He entered the U.S. Navy on December 12, 1945 and served as a Seaman 2nd Class for two years. Following his active duty, her served in the Reserves until March 8, 1950.
He was united in marriage to Carol G. Berger on July 16, 1950 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, IA. This union was blessed with seven children: Quentin, Kevin, Tracy, Sharon, Clark, Anthony and Eric.
In their early years Paul and Carol ran a gas station, restaurant & grocery store in Waukon. In 1960 Paul and Carol moved to Decorah where they had the Dolly Madison Dairies franchise. Carol helped with bookkeeping for the business. In 1965 Paul and Carol moved to their current location in Decorah where they had a poultry and hen laying operation, selling eggs to local businesses in Decorah.
Paul was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Great Lights Masonic Lodge #181. He loved dogs, enjoyed fishing and liked to go on rides and look at the countryside. He also helped people by inviting them into his home, gave them meals and included them for holidays.
Paul became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home on October 17, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carol on August 19, 2008; one son, Eric, on June 6, 1992; one grandson, Joshua, on August 2, 1994; one brother, Richard Quandahl; and one nephew, Donald Gavle.
He is survived by his six children: Quentin (Mary) Quandahl of Ossian, IA, Kevin (Kris) Quandahl of Decorah, Tracy Quandahl of Calmar, Sharon (Mark) Cameron of Spencer, IA, Clark (Joy) Quandahl of Houston, TX, and Anthony (Jan) Quandahl of Decorah; his sixteen grandchildren: Elspeth (Rick) Altmann, April Quandahl, Kathryn Quandahl, Karla (Dave) Goertzen, Kole (Alicia) Quandahl, Kayla Quandahl, Nicole (Will) Larsen, Carrie Quandahl, Miranda Quandahl, Paul (Jill) Quandahl, Jed Cameron, Jake Cameron, Eric Quandahl, Brent Quandahl, Shane Quandahl and Justin Quandahl; his seven great-grandchildren: Hannah and Gracie Altmann, Aiyanna and Justice Wilson, Caelyn Quandahl, Anthem and Lila Quandahl; his five sisters and two brothers: Ozzie (Phyllis) Quandahl of Waukon, Eloise (Delbert) Bulman of Dorchester, IA, Sandra (Gordon) Tangen of Dorchester, Naomi Ferguson of Keaau, HI, Beverly (Ron) Gavle of Decorah; Roger (Mary) Quandahl of Waukon, and Marsha (Bernie) Stroh of Waterloo, IA; four sisters-in-law: Ruth Quandahl of Waukon, IA, Evelyn Berge of Brazoria, TX, Virginia Ludeking of Ames, IA and Mary Berger of Waukon, IA; and one brother-in-law, Gary (Jeanie) Berger of Waukon, IA.
