Ronald Numedahl, age 66, of Decorah, IA, died on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family with a courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 18, 2011, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and also from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah.
Ronald John Numedahl was born on December 25, 1944, the son of Raymond and Magdalen (Bullerman) Numedahl of Calmar Iowa. Ron attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville and then Calmar High School in Calmar. Ron was drafted into the US Army, where he received his high school diploma, and served in Germany for two years. After the service, he worked for Wiltgen Construction for a short time, and farmed with his father. Ron met the love of his life, Marleen Holthaus, and they were married on June 7, 1969, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, and to this union, three children were born; Jeff, Jill, and June. Ron and Marleen farmed for over forty-two years together, working side by side, where they were involved in dairy, beef, and hog farming. Ron also did custom farming and welding. Ron was passionate about his farms and took pride in his family. Ron always had time to visit with anyone that stopped by and enjoyed taking time to have coffee. Ron enjoyed a good competitive game of cards with family and friends. Above all, Ron loved his family and grandchildren, where he left a legacy of his love for ice cream with his grandchildren. Ron will always be remembered as a loving husband, a patient father, a compassionate friend, and a kind-hearted and good natured soul by all who met him.
Ron is survived by his wife: Marleen Numedahl, Decorah, IA. One son: Jeff (Ellen) Numedahl, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Jill Sallis, San Antonio, TX, and June (friend, Tony Kronenberger) Numedahl, Minneapolis, MN. Four grandchildren: Allyiah & Andrew Sallis and Ashlee & Alex Numedahl. His mother: Maggie Numedahl, Decorah, IA. Two sisters: Cheryl Hageman, Calmar, IA, and Karen (Paul) Skrypek, Calmar, IA. Two brothers: Robert (Joyce) Numedahl, Ossian, IA and Randy Numedahl, Calmar, IA. His mother-in-law: Germaine Holthaus, Calmar, IA. One sister-in-law: Jan (Curt) Vick, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Leland Holthaus, Calmar, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Ron was preceded in death by his father: Raymond Numedahl on May 31, 1973. His father-in-law: Rudy Holthaus on December 28, 2002. His brother-in-law: Dale Hageman on February 10, 2010.
