William G. Naef, age 79, of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

A private family graveside service will be held at Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.

William George Naef was born August 26, 1930, Women’s Suffrage Day, the only child of Ulrich George and Isabelle Dorothea (Nelson) Naef in Chicago, Illinois. He attended public schools in Chicago and Huntsville, Alabama and high school and community college in Muscatine, Iowa.

William was united in marriage to Hanna Helena Naef on June 20, 1953 at the Presidio Post Chapel in San Francisco, CA.

William was a lifelong evening student, graduating from San Francisco Community College, Golden Gate University, State University of New York, San Diego State University, Cogswell Polytechnical College and Drake University.

He served in the U.S. Army from October 1950 to October 1953 as a Sergeant. He then spent thirty years in Federal Service: three in the U.S. Army and twenty-seven years for thirteen Agencies with twenty-one assignments. Prior to his death, William was a semi-retired Ammonia and Safety Consultant. He had also previously served as a Machinist’s and Electrician’s Apprentice, Technician, Professional Engineer and Facilities’ Manager.

William was a fourth generation Lutheran and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Throughout his life, he was a member of many organizations including National Society of Professional Engineers, Iowa Engineering Society, Society of Fire Protection Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Institute of Electrical Engineers, National Fire Protection Association, American Society of Quality, Society of American Military Engineers, the American Legion, Marines Memorial Club, Mechanics Institute, National Rifle Association, Iowa Rifle & Pistol Association, United States Revolver Association, the Elks and Odd Fellows. He was a past member of Freemasons, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Republican Party, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation and the Order of the Eastern Star. William was also a Friend of the Library and member of the Porterhouse Foundation, Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum and the Winneshiek County Hospital Auxiliary.

William is remembered for promoting safety at least once every day and encouraging young people to advance their station in life by education, improved presentation of self, choice of language and having an investment plan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulrich and Isabelle Naef.

William is survived by his wife, Helena Naef of Decorah; his sister-in-law, Heidi Danieli of El Verano, CA; and his nephew, Dr. Barry (Diane) Danieli of El Verano, CA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Aase Haugen Homes, Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home or Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice.
