Carl P. Moe, age 93, of Decorah, IA, died Friday, March 10, 2006 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah with full military honors.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Monday, March 13, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with a VFW Memorial Service at 6:30 P.M. Monday, and an hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the church.

Carl P. Moe was born on August 18, 1912 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, IA the son of Otto and Mina (Prestsater) Moe. He was baptized in 1912 and confirmed on June 19, 1927 at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Carl attended Lee School in Glenwood Township from 1919 to 1927.

Carl farmed with his parents and family on the family farm and farmed with his brother, Merlin, until Carl entered the military service.

Carl entered the US Army on May 1, 1942, serving in the 3rd Armored Division, Spear Head Unit, during WWII. He was severely wounded at the Battle St. Lo in 1944 in France. He earned the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre ribbons with one silver battle star and 3 overseas bars. He was honorably discharged on his birthday, August 18, 1945. Carl was left disabled from his war injuries. He took care of his elderly parents for many years.

Carl retained his love of family gatherings at Moe Park, which was on the original family farm. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and following local and national politics. Carl enjoyed going to the Senior Citizen’s Meal Site for noon meals. He was an avid sports fan and was especially passionate about the St. Louis Cardinals. Carl also liked playing softball, pitching horseshoes and golf, and was a member of Silvercrest Golf & Country Club for a number of years. He was a member of the VFW where he served as historian and the DAV where served as an officer. Carl was also very active in the 3rd Armored Division, traveling to annual reunions throughout the Midwest. Carl was a resident of Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home since January 22, 2004.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his 3 brothers and sisters-in-law: Juel (Edna) Moe, Alert (Gertrude) Moe and Merlin (Martha) Moe; 4 sisters and brothers-in-law: Myrtle (Adolph) Hagen, Esther (Melvin) Rovang, Stella (Melvin) Sorenson and Arlene (Carlton, Sr.) Fagerlie; and 3 nieces: Ethel Rovang, Marcella Knudson and Linda Rovang.

He is survived by 7 nephews: Ernest (Dorothy) Moe of Janesville, WI, Dean (LaRue) Hagen of Decorah, Ray Rovang of Decorah, Robert (Marlene) Sorenson of Decorah, Donald (Estrella) Rovang of Apple Valley, CA, Carlton (Lorinda) Fagerlie Jr. of Decorah, and Richard Moe of Houston, TX; 5 nieces: Nancy (Lance) Lee of Dolores, CO, Eileen (Dean) Schrempp of Coon Rapids, MN, Janice (Roy) Matthews of Charles City, Carol (David) Wilcox of Oceanside, CA, and Betty Chapman of Decorah; several great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
