Duane McIntosh, age 69, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, December 18, 2008, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, following a short courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, Burr Oak, Iowa, with Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa, and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning.

Duane Sphar McIntosh was born February 27, 1939, the son of Chester and Grace (Sphar) McIntosh in Decorah, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Duane married Judy Flatland on March 19, 1961, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. To this union three sons were born: Randy, Russell, and Rick. Duane loved farming, and with his family he farmed all of his life – the last thirty-nine years on their present farm. His passion was working with Randy and Russell at the shop and with the “McIntosh Custom Farming” operation. Duane and Judy also enjoyed their trips to Texas to spend time with Rick on his ranch. Duane enjoyed restoring tractors and cars, with one of his last projects being a 1952 Army Jeep. Duane’s greatest love and top priority was his family, and lived by the motto: “Faith, Family and Friends”. Duane was an active member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, a Trustee for Hesper Township, a member of the Decorah Rural Fire Protective Association, and served on the Winneshiek County Fair Board for ten years. In 1975, Duane received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award for Winneshiek County, and also the Lutheran Young Farmer Award.

Duane is survived by his wife: Judy McIntosh, Decorah, IA. Three sons: Randy (Renae) McIntosh, Decorah, IA; Russell (Tina) McIntosh, Decorah, IA and Rick McIntosh, Alvarado, TX. His Norwegian exchange sons/daughter: Oyvind Huset, Kjetil (Chuck) and Eivind Hovi, and Irene Hovi Strand. Six grandchildren: Allison McIntosh (special friend, Adam Weiss); Amanda (Keith) Schwartzhoff; Breanna McIntosh (special friend Jake Johnson); Tanner, Benji, & Justin McIntosh. One brother: Howard (Judy) McIntosh, Decorah, IA. One sister: Judy (Jerry) Nagel, Preston, MN. One sister-in-law: Orabel Ehrie, Decorah, IA. Three brothers-in-law: Duane (Linda) Flatland, Waukon, IA; Ray (Ellen) Flatland, Foster City, CA and Gary (Peg) Flatland, Verona, WI, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents: Chester McIntosh on December 7, 1987 and Grace McIntosh on April 26, 2008. Father and mother-in-law: Ole and Anna Flatland. One sister and brother-in-law: LuAnn & Carrol Solum.
