Edward T. McCabe, age 90, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 18, 2005 {sic} at Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, April 22, 2006 at St. Benedict Catholic Church by Rev. Gary Krapfl. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Plymouth Rock.
Frends may call from 12:30-1:30 P.M. Saturday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.
Edward Terrance McCabe was born February 19, 1916 in Bluffton, Iowa, the son of Bert V. and Mary (Mullaney) McCabe. He was educated in Plymouth Rock Country School.
Edward was united in marriage to Celeste M. Kral on April 27, 1950 in Austin, Minnesota. To this union, four children were born: Mary, Dean, Shirley and Mark.
Edward worked as a Catapillar operator for many years with Meyer Brothers Construction in Ft. Atkinson and several other area construction companies. He was a World War II Navy Veteran, serving as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class stationed in Bermuda. He was Honorably Discharged after four years, two months and seventeen days of service on November 13, 1945.
Edward was a former member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock; a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah and a sixty year member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 1977 of Decorah. He enjoyed family vacations and gatherings, car rides to Bluffton in his later years and spending time with his grandchildren. He liked to hang out with his “VFW buddies” and was fond of his new dog “Barney”
Survivors include his four children, Mary McCabe of Decorah; Dean (Theresa) McCabe of Decorah; Shirley Holtz of Decorah and Mark (Charlotte) McCabe of Owatonna, MN.; eight grandchildren, Christopher Jensen, Jill Mara, Matt McCabe, Jessica Mann, Anastasia Holtz, Katherine Holtz, Celeste Holtz and Molly McCabe; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler Buchheit, Tasha Buchheit, Tanner Buchheit, Zachary Mara, Nicholas Mara, Allen Mann, Carly Mann and Chelsey Holtz; a sister, Regina Hughes of Harmony, MN; a brother, Leland (Margo) McCabe of Louisville, KY and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Jackson of Columbia, S.C. and many nieces and nephews.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Celeste on May 4, 1991; a grandson, Eddie Holtz on January 4, 2006; a great-grandson, Heath Mann on December 31, 2005; and three brothers, Robert, William and Donald McCabe; a sister, Dorothy in infancy, and two brothers-in-law, Maurice Hughes and Jim Jackson.
