L. Mildred Luzum, 97, passed away Friday, September 1, 2006 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA, where she had resided for the past two and a half years.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calmar Lutheran Church with the Rev. Norman Bauer officiating, with inurnment in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call after 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.

Laura Mildred Thompson was born on the family farm near Spillville on September 8, 1908, fourth child of Theodore and Emma (Albertson) Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lincoln Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. She attended the Spillville Public school, completing 10th grade.

On September 29, 1936 she was united in marriage to Fred E. Luzum at the Decorah Lutheran Parsonage. To this union a daughter, Laurel, and a son, Lyle, were born. Fred and Mildred farmed the Luzum family farm northeast of Calmar from the time of their marriage until they retired and moved to their new home in Calmar in 1978.

Mildred was a member of Calmar Lutheran church where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was active in WELCA. She was a thrifty lady who enjoyed sewing and reconstructing clothing, making quilts, embroidery and other handiwork, doing crossword puzzles and baking.

She is survived by her daughter Laurel (Jim) Womeldorf of Decorah; her son Lyle (Sue) of Calmar; grandsons Brian (Paula) Womeldorf of Decorah and David Womeldorf of Prior Lake, Mn; granddaughter Stephanie (Matt) Hughes of Decorah; great-grandchildren Sebastian, Samantha, Emily and Grace; sister Thelma Brekke of West Union, sister-in-law Doris Thompson of Spillville; 19 nieces and nephews; and her special friend at Aase Haugen Home, Eleanor Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred on March 24, 1997, brothers John, Oliver and Einar Thompson, sisters Edith Wangsness, Ethel Anderson and Angie Junko as well as many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Aase Haugen Home, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, Iowa 52101 or Calmar Lutheran Church, 205 North East Street, Calmar, Iowa 52132.
