Elvin Kubesh, age 89, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Monday, October 1, 2007, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2007, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be given to Wellington Place or to Winneshiek County Hospice.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday and on Saturday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, in Calmar. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., a scripture service at 5:00 and a VFW Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Elvin John Kubesh was born on April 4, 1918, the son of Edward and Barbara (Janovsky) Kubesh, on the family farm west of Calmar, Iowa. He attended the country school west of Calmar, St. Wenceslaus Catholic school in Spillville and high school in Calmar. Elvin worked quarry construction up until 1941. He married Mabel Pechota on October 27, 1941, in Protivin, Iowa and to this union, four daughters were born: Barbara, Elizabeth, Nancy and Debra. Elvin entered the US Army in 1942 and served until the end of World War II, in 1945. After returning from his tour of duty, he drove semi for Frana Beer and ran drag line equipment for Hennesey Brothers, until taking over the family farm. He continued employment at Calmar Manufacturing until his retirement in 1982. After retirement, he enjoyed doing what he wanted to do. Elvin was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Halverson Giesen American Legion Post #266 and the Helof – Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Elvin’s survivors include his wife: Mabel Kubesh, Calmar, IA. Four daughters: Barbara (John) Jacobs, Nanticoke, PA; Elizabeth (Tom) Blair, Seattle, WA; Nancy (David) Hageman, Calmar, IA and Debra (Drew) Meyer, Mason City, IA. Nine grandchildren: Brenda (Harry) Wenner, John (Sandy) Jacobs, Jr., Thomas Blair, Timothy (Heidi) Blair, Brian (Heather) Hageman, Christopher (Courtney) Hageman, Brandy Meyer Diop, Yvonne Meyer and Wade Meyer. Nine great grandchildren: Raquel & Bret Wenner, Ashlee, Travis & Nicholas Jacobs, Sophia Blair, Emily & Cole Hageman and Caitlyn Hageman. One sister: Evelyn Hruska, Verona, WI. Four sisters-in-law: Iona Kubesh, Decorah, IA; Bea Frana, Calmar, IA; Margaret Busch, Ossian, IA; and Alice Pechota, Cresco, IA.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents: Ed and Barbara Kubesh. One brother: Robert Kubesh. One niece: Mary Jo Novak. Three brothers-in-law: Eddie Frana, Cletus Busch and Bill Pechota. Three sisters-in-law: Celia (Joe) Pizinger, Philomenia (Bill) Svestka and Viola (Eldon) Mason.
