Sharon Kakos, age 61, of Decorah died Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 11, 2010, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Steven Jacobsen presiding. Burial will be the Russell Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m., on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial to Winneshiek County Medical Center Hospice, 907 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101.

Sharon (Haugen) Kakos was born on February 6, 1948, the daughter of Paul O. and Helen (Lee) Haugen in Decorah, Iowa. Sharon was a tiny baby at 3 lbs and 6 ounces and was baptized in the hospital on February 7, 1948, and confirmed on June 16, 1963, at the First Lutheran Church. Sharon attended rural country school at Canoe #2 and Canoe #9, before graduating from Decorah High School in 1966. Sharon married George Kakos on April 1, 1967, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, and to this union, three daughters were born: Debra, Christine and Nicolette. Sharon enjoyed the personal face to face connection with the customers, her favorite jobs were the Hobby Shop, Norb’s True Value, Fareway and Wal-Mart. Sharon was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Locust. Sharon was a very giving person and a good friend to many people and will be dearly missed.

Sharon is survived by her husband: George Kakos, Decorah, IA. Three daughters: Debra (Matt Mullins) Kakos, Bloomington, IN; Christine Kakos, Seattle, WA and Nicolette (Shawn) O’Neill, Decorah, IA. Four grandchildren: Serina, Simon, August and Elias. Her mother: Helen Vine, Decorah, IA. Two brothers: Paul Haugen, Decorah, IA and David (Sharyl) Haugen, Ossian, IA, along with aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Sharon was preceded in death by her father: Paul Haugen in 1969. Her step-father: Charles Vine in 2003. Her father and mother-in-law: Nicholas and Gertrude (Thompson) Kakos.
