Helen Gladys (Jaastad) Johnson was born September 14, 1906, the daughter of George and Julia (Korsen/Johnson) Jaastad. She attended rural school, Canoe Township No. 4 and later Valders College in Decorah, where she received her teaching certificate. In April 1924 she married Oliver M. Johnson, and in 1954 this marriage was dissolved. To this union four children were born: Vivian, Frances, Orville, and Sharon.
Helen, commonly known as Gladys, after leaving the farm where she had lived for many years, worked at the Winneshiek Hotel, then for the Decorah Hospital, and at a summer resort in northern Minnesota, all as a cook, before her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing the organ and piano, and spending time with family. She was a long time member of Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, where she was confirmed in 1921.
In 1993 she became a resident of Colonial Manor and remained there until she joined her family and friends who had passed on before her.
Gladys is survived by her three daughters: Vivian Meher of Houston, TX; Frances Stoskopf of Decorah, IA; and Sharon Haugen of Fort Myers, FL; twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and fifteen great great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other family members.
She was preceded in death by one son Orville Johnson on February 14, 2006; one great grandson Elijah Johnson; her parents; three sisters, Genevieve Allen, Ruth Allen, and Mabel Agnes in infancy; and one brother Gerald Jaastad.
