Virginia Humpal, age 80, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 7, 2008, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00- 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning. There will be a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. and a rosary at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Virginia Mary (Elsbernd) Humpal was born August 27, 1927 to Frank and Ida (Heying) Elsbernd on the family farm south of Calmar, IA. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina, IA. On October 6, 1948, she married Virgil Humpal at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, IA. They farmed together until 1976. Virginia was an avid Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye fan. She enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s activities, golfing and quilting. She was a member of the St. Aloysius Rosary Society and St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Virginia’s survivors include one daughter: Marilyn (Steve) Einck, Fort Atkinson, IA. One son: Dennis (Bonnie) Humpal, Calmar, IA. One daughter-in-law: Barb (Greg) Drew, Manchester, IA. Seven grandchildren: Kaia (Aaron) McConnell, Blake Humpal, Shira (Christopher) Streeter, Jarret Einck, Landon (Kristin) Einck, Casey Humpal and Kayla Humpal. Four great grandchildren: Jordan & Kaylie Rommes and Keagen & Carson Streeter. Two brothers: Romuald (Florine) Elsbernd, Spillville, IA; Cletus (Georgina) Elsbernd, Calmar, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Ermin (Pauline) Humpal, Milwaukee, WI and Melvin (Darlene) Humpal, Calmar, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Ruth Elsbernd, Calmar, IA and Rosemary Holthaus, Tomah, WI.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents. Her husband: Virgil in 1998. One son: Kenneth 1992. Two brothers: Linus & Myron Elsbernd. One sister-in-law:
