Viola Houdek, age 87, of Calmar, Iowa died on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa following a lingering illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday, from 3:00-8:00 p.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 and scripture service at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Viola Josephine (Jarosh) Houdek was born on March 19, 1918 the daughter of Albert and Agnes (Klimesh) Jarosh in Little Turkey, Iowa. Viola attended school at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin. She married Gabriel Houdek on October 27, 1936 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin Iowa. Together they farmed North of Cresco, near Davis Corners and Kendallville and then returned to the Davis Corners farm. They had a farm sale and then moved six miles north of Calmar, where they remodeled a school house and lived in it. Viola did in home health care and worked as a custodian at Luther College. Viola enjoyed fishing, gardening, crocheting, embroidery and quilting. She made a quilt and afghan for all her family members. Viola was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, ladies circle and TOPS.

Viola’s Survivors include her two sons: Lawrence “Larry” (Pat) Houdek, Cresco, IA and Steven (Janet) Houdek, Calmar, IA. Four daughters: Catheron “Karen” Jertson, Dubuque, IA; Ila (Donald) Vick, Ridgeway, IA; Patricia Houdek (Eric Witzke), Cedar Rapids, IA and Deborah Strasser (Dennis Frimml), South Amana, IA. Twenty grandchildren and twenty nine great grandchildren and another great grandbaby due in March. One brother: Stanley (Ruby) Jarosh, Cedar Rapids, IA. Two sisters: Irene Herold, Cedar Rapids, IA and Dolores (Chuck) Ira, Spillville, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gabriel in 1987; two daughters: Luanne Houdek in infancy and Loretta Marhoul in 1983; one grandson: Shon Houdek in 1999; and two sons-in-law: George Marhoul and Ed Jertson in 2005; two brothers: Vendelin Jarosh in 1987 and George Jarosh in 1998.
