Ann Houdek, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, August 19, 2011, at St. Agnes Catholic Church at 2883 - A18 rural Cresco, IA (2 Mi. West of Burr Oak Iowa) with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a VFW Ladies Auxiliary service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Ann Celine (Sheridan) Houdek was born on December 18, 1929, the daughter of John and Stella (Gorman) Sheridan in Waterloo, Iowa. Ann attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Sister School in Lawler and graduated from Lawler High School. She then attended Upper Iowa University and Luther College, receiving her teaching certificate; she taught country school near the Glenwood Church. Ann married Marvin Houdek on May 28, 1951, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Lawler, IA. They lived in Decorah for a short time before they purchased Marv’ father’s farm in near Burr Oak in 1966. They ran the Crystal Inn in Burr Oak for twelve years, retiring in 1990. Ann enjoyed needlework, fishing, gardening and sewing, but especially loved being with her family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ann was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Ann’s survivors include her five daughters: Mary Jane (Ron) Michels, Decorah, IA; Roselyn Houdek, Burr Oak, IA; Georgette (Jeff) Pierce, Byron, MN; Colleen (Loren) Busch, Burr Oak, IA; and Jacqueline (Darwin) Kupka, Decorah, IA. One son: Michael (Loreen) Houdek, Burr Oak, IA. One daughter-in-law: Diane Houdek, Decorah, IA. Fifteen grandchildren: Alex Michels, Jeremy (Emily) Pierce, Sarah Pierce (Jody Beck) and Dustin Pierce (Tonya Burns); Celine Houdek, Crystal, Chelcie and Cloey Busch; Justin and Jaimisen Kupka; Joshua (Jennifer) Houdek and Caleb (Alicia) Houdek; Thomas Houdek, Jenni (Niki) Houdek and Jordan Houdek. Four great grandchildren: August & Clara Pierce and Conner & Delaney Houdek. Three brothers-in-law: Dwayne (Diane) Houdek, Mabel, MN; Richard (Marilyn) Houdek, Rochester, MN and Merle (Carol) Houdek, Rochester, MN. One sister-in-law: Marian Johnson, Harmony, MN and many nieces and nephews.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents: John and Stella (Gorman) Sheridan. Her husband: Marvin Houdek on June 17, 2005. Her son: John Houdek on March 17, 2009. Two sisters: Ellen (Nick) Achen and Alice Sheridan in infancy. Two brothers: Francis (Florence) Sheridan and John in infancy. One brother-in-law: Paul Johnson. One sister-in-law: Mary Houdek. Two nieces: Rosemary and Rita and a nephew: Randy Johnson
